KOKOSCHKA REVIVAL | A MESA USC

Franzensfeste Fortress

A Mesa Usc is a sound and light installation that reflects on the concept of the political border. Here, music is experienced both as a source of comfort and, at the same time, as a landscape. At its heart lies women’s oral memory: folk song traditions demonstrate their potential to preserve, renegotiate, and evolve cultural identities in border regions. Based on recordings from Friuli Venezia Giulia—including the Anutis quartet, the Stu Ledi choir, and Pashto singers Ismail Swati and Maryam Rashid—the tonal dramaturgy is expanded with new recordings from South Tyrol: Laura Willeit, Daniela Willeit and Anita Obwegs. The site-specific installation builds on the work Sot Glas, which brings voices and memories to life in a unique space. The project was conceived by Ana Shametaj and Giuditta Vendrame, produced by Kokoschka Revival, and developed in close collaboration with sound artist Renato Rinaldi and lighting designer Giulio Olivero, with additional support for the lighting design from Nicolò Brunetto and technical direction by Fabio Brusadin. We would like to thank Barbara Kostner, Paolo Vinari and the Referat Volksmusik in Bolzano for their scientific advice.
